About the Beef Information Centre (BIC)
The Beef Information Centre is a national organization formed in 1973 by Canadian beef producers. Its mandate is to increase sales of beef and beef products within Canada through advertising, promotion, and consumer education. BIC develops and implements foodservice promotions, retail point of sale and merchandising programs, nutrition information and public relations initiatives. BIC also encourages the creation of new products.
Funding
A fee, called the beef check-off, is paid by the beef producer at the time the animal is sold. The current check-off for promotion is assessed at $1.00 per marketing, although actual contributions vary from province to province.
Structure
BIC is governed by 14 elected beef producers who represent the interests of 100,000 beef producers across Canada. These elected representatives form the BIC committee. Provincial representation on the committee is based on the level of funding by the province.
The BIC committee sets policy, strategic direction and budget of the Beef Information Centre and is accountable to a 25-member Board of elected Directors of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association.
There are seven BIC offices across Canada, with the head office in Mississauga, Ontario.
