Feeding the world, Caring for the earth

The United Nations (UN) has proclaimed 2014 as International Year of Family Farming.

The UN sites family farming as important for three main reasons:

• it is linked to world food security;
• it promotes balanced diets and helps protect biodiversity; and
• it promotes strong local economies when coupled with other policies which serve to protect the well-being of communities.

We applaud all farmers across Canada for their commitment to bring good food to Canadian tables. And of all the farms in the nation, 98% are family owned and operated. Families like Allen and Lillian Patkau (pictured below), beef ranchers in Hanley Saskatchewan take pride in protecting and preserving their lifestyle and land to leave a legacy for future generations. As the recipients of The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA) nationally for 2013, their story is inspiring.
