This March Break: Boost your family food skills

Helping our kids learn to eat well involves an understanding of food from the ground up. From how food is grown and gets to our tables, to how to plan and prepare a wholesome meal – it all comes down to Food Literacy – those basic life skills that enable us to feed ourselves (and others)–well.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture has developed a “6 x 16” initiative, with the goal that every Canadian 16 year old should be able to make 6 wholesome meals from scratch. Here’s how you can help make it happen:

  • Get your kids in the kitchen to make 6 meals together over March Break – start off with one of the easiest meals ever: roast beef dinner. Details at beefinfo.org #roastbeefchallenge.
  • It’s Ag Literacy week Mar 2 to 8th – encourage your school to make agriculture part of their curriculum: http://www.aitc.ca.
  • Get on-line and explore our Food Skills resources: Cooking Lessons, Food Skills Blog, YouTube Cooking Lessons and Canadian Beef Story videos. Test-drive a variety of cuts and cooking methods from braising and roasting to stir-fry – so many options to choose from.

So get out there and get exploring food – March break is the perfect time to get started!
