BIC Activities

Market development programs in retail, foodservice and new products are BIC's key activities. Nutrition and consumer communication initiatives are implemented to improve consumers' perceptions about beef.

Structure

BIC is a division of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association.

Thirteen elected beef producers representing the interests of over 90,000 beef producers across Canada form the BIC Committee. Provincial representation on this committee is based on the level of funding by that province.

The BIC Committee sets the policy, strategic direction, and budget of the Beef Information Centre, and it is accountable to the 29-member board of elected directors of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association.

Funding

The Beef Information Centre is funded by beef producers through a beef check-off. The beef producer pays this fee at the time the animal is sold.

BIC Offices

There are five BIC offices across Canada.

Industry Profile

Unlike some commodities that are managed by a marketing board system, the beef industry trades freely in the marketplace without controls on supplies and price. Furthermore, there are no provincial trade tariffs.

The price of beef is determined by supply and demand. Demand is the quantity of beef consumers are willing and able to buy given the price and choices of alternatives available to them.
