Cooking Instructions:

  1. a) Season strips/kabobs cut from sirloin, with pepper, garlic powder, etc.; marinating is not necessary, unless for flavour.
    b) If cut from round or sirloin tip, marinate for 1/2 - 2 hours.
  2. Stirfry strips in lightly oiled or nonstick pan (no lid, no liquid) over medium heat 2 - 3 minutes. DO NOT overcook. Remove. Stirfry assorted vegetables. Return beef to pan in last few minutes of cooking.
  3. For kabobs, alternate cubes of beef with vegetables and broil or grill for approx. 5 min/side.

Beef Strip Variations:

  1. TERIYAKI STIRFRY - Marinate beef strips in ½ cup (125 mL) teriyaki sauce before cooking. Add assorted vegetables when beef is just starting to brown. Sauce may be heated and thickened with cornstarch.
  2. FAJITAS - Marinate beef strips in ½ cup (125 mL) salsa sauce. Brown and serve in tortillas with grated cheese, shredded lettuce and tomatoes.
  3. STROGANOFF - Brown beef with onions and mushrooms, then add 1 cup (250 mL) tomato sauce thickened with 1 Tbsp (15 mL) flour. Add ½ cup (125 mL) fat-reduced sour cream and heat gently. Serve with noodles.

Kabob Marinade Variations

  1. Use 1 cup (250 mL) of clamato juice, teriyaki sauce or salad dressing (e.g. Italian) per lb (500 g) of beef.
  2. Use 1 cup (250 mL) red wine plus 2 Tbsp (30 mL) onion soup mix.

Helpful Hints

  1. Boneless beef strips and kabobs have no waste. These cuts will provide 3-4 servings/lb (7 servings/kg). Making stirfry or kabobs is a great way to stretch a steak to serve more people.
  2. Store fresh beef strips or cubes in the refrigerator for 2 days or in the freezer for 3-4 months.
  3. To prevent wooden skewers from singeing, soak them in water for hour before using.
  4. To slice your own stirfry strips, partially freeze steak before slicing thinly.
  5. Stirfry small batches of strips at a time so that excess juices do not accumulate in pan.
  6. Place beef in glass dish or ziplock plastic bag for marinating. After marinating, discard remaining marinade or boil for 10 minutes and use to baste kabobs, or thicken with flour and use as a sauce.
  7. EASY MEALS IN MINUTES - Pre-cut beef strips are now generally available. Ask your retailer if you do not see them in the counter. They make great last minute meals with bottled stirfry sauces and frozen Oriental vegetables.
