Nutrient Content Claims
 |
According to the Guide to Food Labelling and Advertising "nutrient content claims are statements or expressions which describe, directly or indirectly, the level of a nutrient in a food or a group of foods."
Nutrient content claims for ground beef
The mandatory Nutrition Facts table on ground beef packages will make it easier to use nutrient content claims or to participate in programs such as Health Check™. For example, you could claim that all ground beef is an excellent source of protein. Here is a list of possible claims for ground beef.
If the claim is for a nutrient that is not included as a core nutrient in the Nutrition Facts table (NFT), you must add this nutrient to the NFT in the required format. Claims must clearly refer to all ground beef rather than to a specific brand or store. For additional information consult the Guide to Food Labelling and Advertising.
Nutrient content claims for beef cuts
Nutrient content claims may also be made for beef cuts. When the claim is made by a retailer or processor, a Nutrition Facts table is required and must include the nutrient that is the subject of the claim. It must be clear that the claim refers to all beef of that type, not to beef with a specific brand or from one store. Check the Guide to Food Labelling and Advertising or with CFIA for the rules regarding retail flyers. See examples of examples for beef cuts.
Nutrient content claims are also possible for value added products. If the product has a NFT, the process would be similar to that for ground beef. If the product has no NFT, the process would be similar to that for beef cuts.
