Chew on This!
Recent research has shown that lean beef can be included in effective cholesterol-lowering diets. Studies suggest that lower fat diets that include lean Canadian beef are just as effective in lowering total blood cholesterol as lower fat diets that include chicken or fish.1
- Trim all visible fat from meats and poultry
- Use lower fat cooking methods like broiling, barbequing, roasting or stir-fry in non-stick pans
- Start with lean or extra lean ground beef, draining after cooking if necessary
- Refrigerate stews, soups and chilis and remove any hardened fat that rises to the surface
- For oil-free stir fries, use non-stick pans with a splash of broth
- Load up your meals with colourful vegetables
- Make whole grains your staple - say goodbye to the white fluffy breads and pastas
- Use lean meats for sandwiches and wraps like roast beef, pork, lamb, turkey or chicken
- Limit salt in your diet by cooking from scratch
- If adding salt, do so during cooking, not at the end. You'll need less salt for good flavour!
- Use less added fats like oil, gravy and creamy sauces.
