What's a serving?

Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide recommends Canadians enjoy 1-3 servings of Meat and Alternatives, like lean Canadian beef, every day. Choose from a variety of lean meats, poultry, fish and eggs as well as dried peas, beans and lentils.

Food Guide servings can be split up into meals and snacks over the day. So, you can enjoy an egg at breakfast, lentil soup at lunch and steak for dinner – as long as you are enjoying appropriate serving sizes!

There’s no need to measure out a serving every time you sit down to eat. Here’s a quick guide to help you eyeball a serving of Meat and Alternatives:

Meat and Alternative       One Serving       Looks like...
Lean Canadian beef 75 grams 2 lipsticks
Peanut butter 30 mL (2Tbsp) 1 golf ball
Eggs 2 2 eggs (obviously!)
Cooked Legumes 175 mL (¾ cup) A cupped hand
