Smart Choices

Most Canadians eat an abundance of foods, but many of us don’t get the nutrients that we need for good health. It’s a paradox, being overfed but undernourished.

Bite into more nutrient-rich foods
Nutrient rich foods have high levels of nutrients such as protein, vitamins and minerals for the fewest calories. By choosing nutrient-rich foods you are getting more bang for your bite!

Chew on This!

A lean beef burger (not super-size deluxe!) provides only about 180 calories and is packed with nutrients like protein, iron and zinc (to name a few). Now that’s nutrient-rich!

For example...
If you only focus on calories, both a banana and 10 potato chips have about the same amount. But if you look at the nutrients, the banana offers vitamin B6, potassium, fibre and vitamin C among others while the chips have little to offer besides crunch.

Some Nutrient-Rich Foods    A Whole Lot of Not Much
(except calories!)

Whole wheat bread & lower fat cheese
Orange
Baked sweet potato
Lean beef burger

Chocolate chip muffin
Fruit drink

Fried chicken
